He earned 24 caps for England during his career and represented his country in the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, famously featuring in the match against Argentina – the infamous “Hand of God” game, where Steve swapped shirts with Diego Maradona at the end of the match, a cherished memento he still holds to this day.

Throughout his career, Steve had the privilege of working under some of the greatest and most respected managers in English football, including Brian Clough, Sir Bobby Robson, Terry Venables, Howard Wilkinson, David Pleat, Gerry Francis, Graham Taylor, and Roy McFarland. These experiences contributed to his reputation as one of the most respected and experienced players of his generation.
