More about

Sammy McIlroy

Discovered as a young talent by Matt Busby, Sammy became the legendary manager’s last signing for Manchester United – the final Busby Babe. He made an instant impact on his debut in 1971, scoring in a memorable local derby against Manchester City. Although his progress was interrupted by serious injuries in 1973, Sammy made a strong return, playing a pivotal role in helping Manchester United secure the Second Division title and reach three FA Cup finals. Over his 11 years at Old Trafford, his loyalty and commitment to the club were unwavering until he transferred to Stoke City for £350,000.

After retiring as a player, Sammy transitioned into management, taking charge of several English football clubs as well as the Northern Ireland national team. His managerial career included achieving promotion to the Football League with Macclesfield Town and Morecambe, further highlighting his dedication to the game.

In 1986, Sammy was awarded the MBE in recognition of his outstanding services to football, a fitting tribute to his remarkable playing and managerial career.
