More about

Ron Atkinson

After retiring as a player, he began his managerial career at Southern League side Kettering Town, where his success earned him the role of Cambridge United manager in 1974. Ron led Cambridge to the Division Four title in 1977, catching the attention of West Bromwich Albion, who appointed him as manager a year later. At The Hawthorns, while honour’s eluded him, the team flourished under his leadership, playing an exciting brand of football that cemented his reputation. In 1981, he was given the prestigious opportunity to manage Manchester United.

During his five years at Old Trafford, Ron guided United to two FA Cup victories, in 1983 and 1985, and a League Cup runner-up finish in 1983. His teams consistently finished in the top four of the First Division, showcasing his ability to maintain high standards.

Ron later returned to West Bromwich Albion before heading to Spain to manage Atlético Madrid. In 1989, he returned to England to take over at Sheffield Wednesday, where he performed a near-miracle to keep them in the top flight that year. However, the club was relegated the following season but bounced back in 1991, winning the League Cup by defeating Manchester United in the final.

His next managerial role was at Coventry City, where he made an immediate impact. Taking over a struggling side, he led them on a six-match unbeaten run, including a famous victory at Anfield, and secured their safety. He had another spell with Sheffield Wednesday and then managed Nottingham Forest, where he kept the former up in 1998 but couldn’t prevent relegation with the latter in 1999.

Following his managerial career, Ron transitioned into television, becoming a popular pundit and co-commentator. Today, he continues to engage audiences with personal appearances and as a sought-after speaker on the after-dinner circuit.
