Despite relegation, Rob remained loyal to Charlton for over two years before being transferred to Newcastle United early in the 1992–93 season for a fee of £700,000.
Rob made his Newcastle debut as a substitute in a 1-0 victory over Peterborough United. He played a pivotal role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances. In their first season back in the top tier, Newcastle finished an impressive third, earning qualification for the UEFA Cup.
In November 1995, Rob was named Premier League Player of the Month, as Newcastle surged 12 points clear at the top of the table. The club eventually finished runners-up to Manchester United that season, but Rob’s outstanding performances earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year for 1995–96.
After Kevin Keegan’s resignation the following season, Kenny Dalglish took over as manager and appointed Rob as Newcastle’s captain. Under his leadership, the team once again finished as runners-up in the Premier League.
Rob’s last goal for Newcastle came in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Manchester United in 2001, marking the end of an era at St James’ Park.
In 2002, Rob transferred to Derby County for £250,000. Despite his efforts, Derby faced relegation from the Premier League. The following year, he joined West Ham United, where he made notable contributions, including goals against Reading and Ipswich Town.
Rob represented England between 1994 and 1998, earning 21 caps and scoring twice. He received his first call-up in September 1994 for a friendly against the USA and marked his debut the following month with a goal against Romania.
