Paul Smith
Played for Warwickshire from 1982 to 1996 and was a big-hitting right-handed batsman and genuinely fast right arm bowler.
Paul made a notable contribution to first-class cricket, scoring four centuries in his 221-match career, with his first coming at the young age of 19. In 1986, he accumulated an impressive 1,500 runs as an opening batsman. Across all first-class competitions, he scored a total of 8,173 runs at an average of 26.44, with a highest score of 140. As a bowler, Paul took 283 wickets at an average of 35.72, including two hat-tricks in 1989 and 1990, and a best bowling performance of 6 for 91. He was a dynamic force in limited-overs cricket, capable of changing the course of a match with either bat or ball, and helped Warwickshire win three 50-over titles.

After being released by Warwickshire in 1996, Paul faced challenges adjusting to life after cricket and spent some time in America, where he became involved in the ‘Cricket Without Boundaries’ project in Los Angeles. The initiative uses the spirit and discipline of cricket to steer young people away from crime. He is also actively involved with the Prince’s Trust in the UK, supporting youth development.
In 2007, Paul published a candid autobiography titled Wasted, praised for its refreshing honesty. Today, he is a popular speaker on the after-dinner circuit, sharing his remarkable life story and experiences with audiences.
