At county level, John was a pivotal figure for Middlesex during their highly successful era in the 1980s. Alongside Phil Edmonds, he formed a formidable right-arm and left-arm spin bowling partnership that significantly contributed to Middlesex’s dominance. Their synergy also extended to the international stage with England, although the two often competed for the same spot in the Test team.
John represented England in 64 Test matches, including captaining the team on two occasions, and played in 61 One Day Internationals. Notably, he remains the only cricketer to have participated in both England rebel tours to South Africa during 1981-82 and 1989-90.
