More about
Jan Mølby
Jan began his senior footballing career with his hometown club, Kolding IF, where he captained the team at just 19. His talent caught the eye of Ajax Amsterdam, where he won the Dutch Championship in 1983. In 1984, Liverpool manager Joe Fagan invited Jan for a 10-day trial, which led to his signing on 22 August. Just three days later, Jan made his Liverpool debut in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Norwich City at Carrow Road.
His first goal for Liverpool came on 1 December 1984 in a league match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Although his first season at Anfield was underwhelming, the arrival of Kenny Dalglish as player-manager in 1985 transformed Jan’s career. Dalglish placed his trust in the Dane, making him a regular starter in the 1985/86 season.
Jan played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s famous double-winning season of 1985/86. In the FA Cup Final against Everton, he was instrumental in creating goals for Ian Rush and Craig Johnston, helping secure a 3-1 victory. Jan continued to impress in the 1986/87 season, finishing as runner-up in the league and achieving the remarkable feat of scoring a hat-trick of penalties in a League Cup tie against Coventry City—a match witnessed by a young Steven Gerrard.
Injury during the 1987 pre-season disrupted Jan’s career, and Liverpool’s midfield partnership of Ronnie Whelan and Steve McMahon became Dalglish’s preferred choice. Despite limited opportunities, Jan showcased his versatility, filling in as a central defender during the 1988/89 season when Alan Hansen was sidelined. However, a driving offence in October 1988 resulted in a three-month prison sentence, temporarily halting his career.
Jan’s resilience saw him return to first-team action, and he played a significant role in Liverpool’s FA Cup triumph in 1991/92 under Graeme Souness. His contribution to the club’s success, particularly as a penalty taker, remains unmatched, with an incredible record of 42 penalties scored.By the mid-1990s, Jan’s career began to wind down due to injuries and fitness struggles. After a brief loan spell at Barnsley, he left Liverpool in 1996 to become player-manager at Swansea City. Over his Liverpool career, Jan scored 62 goals, cementing his place in the club’s history as one of its most reliable penalty takers.
