Making his mark in the iconic red of Liverpool, Rush became a household name, but it was in the red of the Wales national team that he truly earned the admiration of a nation. Between 1980 and 1996, he scored a record 28 goals in 78 appearances for Wales, making him the top scorer in Welsh football history.
Capped for the first time against Scotland in a 1-0 defeat in May 1980, Rush quickly became a key figure in the national side. Although Wales never qualified for a major tournament, his incredible goal-scoring record ensured that he was one of world football’s most respected forwards.
