Despite the pressure, the South African-born Zimbabwe international rose to the challenge and became Liverpool’s last line of defence during a period of domestic and international triumphs. Known for his eccentric style, Grobbelaar’s self-confidence and showmanship occasionally backfired, but his undeniable talent and remarkable agility were never in question.
During his 13 years at Anfield, Grobbelaar made over 600 appearances, collecting an impressive 13 major medals, including 6 League titles, a European Cup, 3 FA Cups, and 3 League Cups—an identical total to Clemence’s achievements over his two-club career. One of the most memorable moments of his career came in the 1984 European Cup Final, when his famous goal-line wobble during the penalty shoot-out against Roma helped inspire Graziani to miss, sealing Liverpool’s victory.
After leaving Liverpool in 1994, Grobbelaar joined Southampton, and later played for Plymouth, Bury, Lincoln, Motherwell, Chesham United, and Northwich Victoria. He also coached the Zimbabwe national team and went on to manage in South Africa.
