More about
Allan Lamb
Allan began his First-Class career playing for Western Province before joining Northamptonshire as an overseas player. It was here that he rose to prominence. With South Africa excluded from Test cricket due to the apartheid regime, Allan was encouraged by Northamptonshire’s secretary, Ken Turner, to leverage his English heritage and play for England.
Over the next decade, Allan became a mainstay of England’s middle order. Known for his stocky build, aggressive approach, and impeccable technique, he combined powerful shots with a knack for unsettling bowlers.
In his career, Allan played in 79 Test matches, captaining England on three occasions. He scored over 4,600 Test runs, including 14 centuries, and made over 100 appearances in One Day Internationals. In 1995, he nearly led Northamptonshire to their first County Championship victory, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful batsmen of his generation.
