Wayne Barnes

Widely recognised as the world’s best rugby referee. Has refereed over 90 test matches and more World Cup matches than any other official.

Since his international refereeing debut in 2006, Wayne has officiated at two European Champions Cup finals, eight Premiership finals, and made history as the first Englishman to referee a British and Irish Lions match. In 2018, he also had the honour of refereeing the landmark clash between Ireland and New Zealand in Dublin.

Wayne is a regular contributor on BT Sport’s weekly rugby magazine programme, Rugby Tonight, offering viewers a unique perspective on the game through the eyes of one of the world’s most respected rugby match officials. He also provides expert analysis as a pundit on Channel 5’s live coverage of the Premiership, alongside hosts David Flatman and Mark Durden-Smith.

Outside of rugby, Wayne is a director and barrister at Fulcrum Chambers, a law firm specialising in bribery and corruption. With his extensive experience and engaging personality, it’s no surprise that Wayne is a highly sought-after MC, keynote speaker, and after-dinner speaker. His reputation as a top speaker was cemented in 2016 when he was awarded MBN Rugby Speaker of the Year.

Originally from the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, Wayne now resides in Twickenham with his wife, Polly, and their two children.

Wayne is deeply committed to charity work and is a patron of the Atrial Fibrillation Foundation. He is also a regular supporter and fundraiser for the rugby charity Wooden Spoon. In addition, Wayne and his wife organise an annual charity rugby match in his hometown of Lydney, raising funds for Breast Cancer Now.
