His Test debut came in 1978 against Pakistan, but it took him seven years and 54 Test innings to score his first century. From there, he went on to achieve a total of 10 Test centuries for England.
A natural leader, he captained Middlesex for 14 years and led England in 23 Test matches, cementing his legacy as one of the game’s most respected figures.
