More about
Paul Merson
By the 1988-89 season, Paul had established himself as a regular on the right wing, playing a pivotal role in Arsenal’s First Division title triumph. Scoring 10 goals that season, he also debuted for England’s Under-21 team and was honoured as the PFA Young Player of the Year. Over the following years, Paul added more silverware to his collection, including another league title in 1991, the FA Cup and League Cup double in 1993, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994. During this period, he also earned his first full England cap.
In November 1994, Paul’s career faced a significant challenge when he bravely admitted to struggles with alcohol and cocaine addiction. The Football Association arranged for him to undergo a three-month rehabilitation programme, and he returned to action in February 1995.
Paul remained a key player during the 1995-96 season under new Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch and continued to impress under Arsène Wenger during the 1996-97 campaign. At the end of that season, he transferred to Middlesbrough for £5 million, a record fee for a non-Premiership club at the time. In total, Paul made 425 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 99 goals.
At Middlesbrough, Paul played a crucial role in their promotion as Division One runners-up in 1997-98 and became the only player in England’s 1998 World Cup squad not representing a top-flight club. He notably scored in the penalty shootout during England’s memorable second-round clash with Argentina.
In the autumn of 1998, Paul joined Aston Villa for £6.75 million, quickly winning over fans with his flair and creativity. During his nearly five-year tenure, he helped Villa reach the FA Cup Final in 2000. After leaving on a free transfer in 2002, Paul joined Portsmouth, where he was instrumental in their promotion to the Premier League in the 2002-03 season.
Paul later signed for Walsall in 2003, but his time there was marred by challenges, including seeking treatment for a gambling addiction. Despite missing crucial games, he was soon appointed manager of Walsall, valiantly attempting to save the club from relegation. Though the team was ultimately relegated, Paul’s leadership saw him retain the managerial role. However, he was dismissed during the 2005-06 season with the club struggling to stay afloat.
After a brief stint at Tamworth, Paul retired from professional football in March 2006.
