Mark first came to prominence at Preston North End before moving to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1977. Brighton initially outbid Liverpool to secure his services for £100,000, but after impressing with the Seagulls and amidst financial difficulties for the club, he was signed by Liverpool for a record-breaking £1 million. This made him both Liverpool’s record signing and the most expensive defender in British football at the time.

At Liverpool, Mark formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Alan Hansen, providing the foundation for the club’s dominance during the 1980s. Together, they won numerous titles and cemented Liverpool’s reputation as one of Europe’s greatest clubs.

During his time at Liverpool from 1981 to 1988, Mark’s impressive trophy collection included:
